FAQs

What Am I Seeing With ForeSight EVS?

Every object that is warmer than absolute zero emits a “heat signature” in the infrared spectrum. The FLIR core inside the ForeSight EVS senses the heat signature and interprets it as a shade of gray. Lighter grays signify warmer objects; cooler objects are shown in darker grays.

Interpreting what you see comes quickly with experience. Pavement – runways, roads, parking areas – retains heat more readily than grassy areas and radiates it back. The better insulated portions of structures, usually rooftops, are darker than the less well insulated walls. Ground vehicles – trucks and cars – sometimes look like low-riders as the heat from the engine and transmission lights up the pavement. The engine cowlings of aircraft glow brightly.

Over wooded areas, ridge tops are usually warmer than the cool valleys, so rising terrain is visible. The earth and its vegetation are warmer than the sky, so a mountain in front of you will be outlined against the dark sky.  Lakes and rivers are normally cooler than their surroundings. Humans and animals stand out against the background.

An hour or two of night flying over familiar territory will put you at ease with the technology.

What Am I Not Seeing With ForeSight EVS?

Lights.

The visible light spectrum is not seen in infrared. You can taxi up to a brightly floodlit building at night and what you will see on your display is the heat signature of the building. The runway lights you see out of the cockpit may show up as warm spots on the EVS display, but the runway itself, almost invisible to your eyes, will shine like Times Square due to its intense heat signature.

Is The ForeSight EVS A Navigational Instrument?

Enhanced vision systems like the ForeSight should not be relied upon for navigational purposes. They are useful aids to navigation, providing information that cannot be visualized in any other way.

Who Can Install My ForeSight EVS?

You can, if you are the builder of an experimental aircraft. Any avionics shop can do the installation, of course. It can also be installed by a light sport repairman or an A&P mechanic. The installation procedure is simple and well-documented in the manual provided with the kit.

Is The ForeSight EVS TSO’d?

The ForeSight is available at this time for experimental aircraft, warbirds and light sport aircraft.
